]]>The issue in this video is not primarily one of ethnicity. It is one of poverty and lack of power. The poor and powerless do not have the same voice as the rich and powerful. Of course, Black Americans suffer disproportionately from our screwed-up system, but all of US are at risk of suffering when we allow the rights of any one group to be violated, or allow the media to control the narrative. Our criminal justice system is in need of major reform.

]]>How would you improve your community?
Sometimes the news can seem overwhelming. We hear of war in Ukraine, inflation fears, corrupt judges and politicians, and out of control bureaucrats; and we wonder what we can do. To me it’s clear that politics isn’t the answer. My focus has turned away from politics and to my community. I try to do the right things each day and focus on my family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and clients. In other words—my neighbors.
Does that mean I ignore national Al and international news? No, but I don’t obsess about it or let it control my daily attitude and actions.
What do you do in you community? What are some things you do to improve the world around you?

]]>Who was your most influential teacher? Why?
My most influential teacher was Terry Whaley during my Sophomore year of high school. Me Whaley was a recent college graduate who loved history and social studies, but he was my English teacher that year. Up to that point, I had received mostly B’s in English, but that year my average was almost 100% because Mr Whaley made us memorize certain parts of speech, pronouns for number and case, and encouraged us to write expressively through a journal entry assignment. I actually earned an award that year for the highest English grade in our high school. I had several other great teachers in college and graduate school who opened my eyes to new things, but I would never have been able to write an essay or research paper successfully had it not been for Terry Whaley.
